I’m not sure if it was the view, the glorious, unexpected sunshine in mid-November, or just the feel of the grand Victorian house, but Ingleside welcomed us as if we were returning home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having chosen our location, North Devon, we set out to find a suitable bed and breakfast property to begin our new adventure. After years working long hours in all-consuming jobs we sought a change; lured by the tantalising goal of finding a slower pace of life – we’ll see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lynton and Lynmouth was an area we knew well; countless days of walking up the river Lyn to Watersmeet, week long escapes with groups of Year 6 pupils to Yenworthy Lodge and weekend get aways with friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, we booked an initial viewing. Sat in the surprisingly sunny, south-facing lounge at Ingleside we knew instantly; this might be the first place we’d seen, but it was perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sense of Stewardship <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moving into a house built in 1896, especially one that is so closely tied to the development of Lynton, we had a strong sense of the past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our new home and business venture was originally owned by the town’s benefactor, Sir George Newnes. Ingleside had been commissioned by him shortly after his investment led to the completion of the Town Hall and Cliff Railway. It served as a characterful family home for the elite during Lynton\u2019s peak Victorian era. Delving deeper into the archives is on our list of ‘things to do when we have more time’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indentures and Mortgages <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The previous owners had carefully preserved these beautiful old papers, ensuring the story of Ingleside remained intact. As well as revealing more about the ownership of Ingleside through time, they serve as a copperplate reminder of our relative insignificance. They echo Oliver Burkeman\u2019s insight that we are ‘a tiny, temporary occupant of a world that was here long before us and will be here long after.’ Oliver Burkeman<\/strong>, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals<\/a> (2021)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living within these historic walls, we might be the new owners, but we are not the masters of the house, merely its most recent, fortunate custodians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
